About the Book

The Unveiling: A Mother’s Reflection on Murder, Grief, and Trial Life is the account of a family’s experience following the murder of law professor Dan Markel. Told from the perspective of his mother, Ruth Markel, the book traces the navigation of an unruly and complicated grieving process set against the backdrop of arrests, trials, and retrials. No family that experiences such a loss is ever the same. The Unveiling goes further, using both personal narrative and the inevitable media attention surrounding the case to bring meaning, understanding, and a sense of forward movement to an otherwise powerless situation.

One of the most attention-grabbing criminal cases in Tallahassee, Florida, rooted in Canada, this story follows Dan Markel’s life, career, and tragic death, as well as the complex investigation that revealed a shocking murder-for-hire plot. In the aftermath, Ruth Markel was cut off from contact with her grandchildren, leading her to become a powerful advocate for grandparents’ rights, efforts that ultimately resulted in legislative change with the passing of the Markel Act.

The Unveiling is both a compelling true-crime narrative and a story of advocacy and hope. It brings readers inside the confusing and grueling process victims face during criminal trials, while offering a message that there can be a path forward through grief, trauma, and loss. With its deeply personal voice and connection to a widely followed case, this book is poised to resonate strongly with today’s true-crime audience and beyond.

What Readers Are Saying

★★★★★

"I am so humbled to have been able to read the story written by a wonderfully intelligent and gracious woman. It details the terrible thing that should never have happened to her. Her book gives the inside story of the effect of such inconceivable violence and its aftermath on the victim's family, friends and colleagues. This book is really a study of one woman's grace and elegance facing evil. God bless Ruth and her family and help them to continue being patient until everyone responsible is brought to justice."

★★★★★

"In this book Ruth Markel succinctly tells the incredible story of the tragic loss of her son and her grief journey. Ruth becomes the reader’s “grief mentor” by revealing how she managed the emotional rollercoaster of grief while not losing sight of her goal of honouring her son and seeing her grandchildren. This book is a must-read for bereaved parents and grandparents, those interacting with victims through the justice system, and anyone who loves a true crime thriller."
